The Brown Fox

Taken from the book “The Brown Fox and Other Stories”, N. York, 1989.

Two men wanted to hunt. So they picked up their hunting guns, got into their car, and drove into the country. They were all excited. They wanted to hunt birds and hunt rabbits. They did not want to eat the birds and the rabbits – they just wanted to hunt them. They thought that it was good sport.

The men took a long time and drove deep into the country where no people could get hurt by accident. It was getting dark, so they turned the headlights on. They were planning to spend the night in a tent; they had a small tent that was just big enough for two people.

The car was passing a small country road when, suddenly, one of the men shouted,

-- "Look!"

Right in front of the car there was a fox ready to go across the road. The driver stopped the car. The men thought that the fox was going to run away, but he didn't. He just turned around and looked at the car lights.

While the fox was looking at the car lights, the men got out of the car and moved a little closer to the fox, but he didn't move. Then one of the men said: "go get the gun."

So one man got the hunting gun and aimed it at the fox. He was sure that the fox would try to run away, but the fox did not move. He just kept on looking at the headlights. He just stared and stared at the lights.

The fox was staring at the car lights, but the two men were staring at the fox.

One of them was aiming at the fox, but he could not fire. He was thinking that the brown fox looked nice. He thought that this was one of the most beautiful animals that he had ever seen. The other man was thinking the same thing.

The men put the hunting gun away. They stared at the fox for a long time. Then the fox ran away.

The two men parked the car and took out the tent. They ate some sandwiches and drank some juice. They did not say one word.

They were thinking that animals can be very nice. They were thinking that they should not hunt them. So they put their hunting guns away and never hunted again.

The brown fox saved the rabbits and the birds!
